A private boat, for the last light

A boat for the two of you, out on the west coast for the sunset, with dinner on board and squid lines under the lights after dark. It runs on calm evenings only, and this page says exactly who decides.

This is for couples who want to see the sun go down from the water rather than from a beach with other people. It is not an island-hopping trip, not snorkelling and not a party boat. The boat leaves when the light is already low, stays off the west coast for the sunset and the first hour of darkness, and comes back.

Squid boats on Phu Quoc leave from both Duong Dong port and An Thoi in the south. We choose the pier for your evening from where you are staying and from the wind, and tell you the day before.

The evening, hour by hour

Day 1

About 1 h 45 before sunset: pick-up at your hotel

A private car collects you. From hotels on Long Beach or in the south, the drive to the pier is usually short. Wear something you do not mind getting a little salty and bring a layer: the wind on the water after dark is cooler than on land.

MealsNone included

Day 2

About 1 h 15 before sunset: the pier and the safety briefing

Before boarding, the crew shows you the life jackets for the two of you, how to fasten them and where they are kept, and tells you the rules for moving around the deck. You wear the life jackets whenever the boat is under way. We confirm before the evening that the boat is registered and that it carries no more people than its licence allows; the briefing is the moment to ask anything.

The captain makes the final call on whether to leave. If the sea has changed since the afternoon check, this is where the evening stops, and the weather rule below applies.

MealsNone included

Day 3

Sunset: engine off on the west coast

The twenty minutes between sunset and last light, from the water

The boat runs along the coast and stops offshore, facing the sun. In November the sun reaches the water at about 17:40; in July, at about 18:31. In the dry months it sets over the sea to the south-west of the boat, which is why we prefer this season. A glass of something cold is served as the sun goes.

MealsNone included

Day 4

After dark: dinner on board and the squid lines

The crew switches on the lights that draw squid to the surface, and hands you rods if you want to try. Squid-fishing guides advise avoiding full-moon nights, so if it matters, pick another evening. Dinner is served on deck: a set menu agreed with you in advance, seafood or vegetarian.

MealsNone included

Day 5

About 2 h 30 after sunset: back at the pier, back to the hotel

The boat returns to the same pier and the car takes you back. Most evenings end between 20:00 and 21:15, depending on the month.

Boat safety: what is checked, and since when

Island boat trips from An Thoi were halted in July 2026 and allowed to depart again from 23 July 2026, with stricter checks since then: inspections of each boat's registration and certification, suspension of boats that fail them, mandatory life jackets and no overloading. Our sunset boat follows the same routine every evening, whichever pier it leaves from.

  1. Registered boat. We use only boats with valid registration and certification for passenger service, and we name the boat in your confirmation.
  2. Life jackets for both of you, checked at the pier, worn while the boat is moving.
  3. No more people than the licence allows. It is a private boat: the two of you and the crew.
  4. A briefing before every departure, covering life jackets, moving on deck and what happens if the weather turns.
  5. The captain decides. Before departure and at any point on the water, the captain's call on the sea is final.

The weather rule: who decides, and what happens to your booking

We check the forecast on the morning of your evening and again about three hours before pick-up. If either check looks wrong, we tell you straight away. On the day, two people can stop the trip: the port's departure control, and the captain at the pier. We do not argue with either.

  • Cancelled before you leave the hotel: you choose another evening during your stay, or the boat price is refunded in full.
  • Cancelled at the pier: the same choice, and the car takes you back or on to dinner if you prefer.
  • Cut short at sea for safety: we offer another evening if one is free; if not, we agree a partial refund with you in writing.
  • You cancel because you feel unwell: tell us as early as you can; the booking terms on your quotation apply.

That is why we suggest booking the boat early in your stay, not on the last evening. If it is called off, there is still time to move it.

Which months work

JFMAMJJASONDWest-coast sunset boat

3 = usually calm, 2 = often fine, 1 = unsettled; check on the day. Based on the dry and wet seasons and monthly rainy days.

From November to April the sea off the west coast is calm and clear, and these are the months the boat is built for. From May, afternoons get choppier and operators move day trips earlier, which a sunset boat cannot do. In September and October boat trips around the An Thoi islands are often unreliable. We still run evenings in the wet months when conditions allow, but we tell you to expect cancellations and we do not put the boat on your last night.

OptionPrice for the boat

Private boat for two, dinner, photographer on boardOn request
Quoted per evening after you send dates and hotel. The boat's size, the pier, the menu and the month move the price. As a typical market range, one agency lists a private romantic evening boat from GBP 110 per person for two, and a yacht sunset charter of 15:00–21:00 with dinner is listed at USD 1,200 for one to six guests. Shared squid-fishing trips with dinner or sunset run about 400,000–600,000 VND per person. Confirm before travel.

What the price includes

  • Private car from your hotel to the pier and back
  • The private boat and crew for the evening
  • Life jackets for both of you and the pre-departure briefing
  • Set dinner on board, agreed in advance; water and soft drinks
  • Squid rods and lights
  • Free rescheduling or a full refund if the trip is cancelled for weather before departure

What it does not include

  • Alcohol beyond the welcome drink, unless agreed in your quote
  • Travel insurance
  • Tips for the crew

The pricing page explains how a sunset boat quote is made and how cheaper offers are usually built. Steps to book are on how to book.

Who this boat is not for

  • Anyone who gets seasick easily. Even on a calm evening the boat moves when it stops for the sunset.
  • Couples who need the boat on one fixed evening in September or October. In those months the sea decides.
  • Travellers who want to swim, snorkel or visit islands. This is a sunset and dinner trip only.
  • Groups. The boat is booked for two; for more people, the boat, the crew and the safety plan change.

Booking it with an itinerary

In the five-night honeymoon the boat sits on day five, and in the seven-night plan on day seven, in both cases with a free evening before departure in case the weather moves it. You can also book it alone if you already have a hotel.

Ask about the boat

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is it safe to take a boat on Phu Quoc after July 2026?

Island trips resumed on 23 July 2026 under stricter checks on registration, life jackets and passenger numbers. Our boat is registered, life jackets are worn while moving, the boat carries only the two of you and the crew, and the captain can stop the trip at any time.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If the port's departure control or the captain says no, the trip does not go. Before departure you choose another evening or a full refund of the boat price.

Can we bring our own wine or a cake?

Tell us when you book. We ask the boat operator and confirm the answer in writing before the evening.

Do we need to know how to swim?

No. Life jackets are worn whenever the boat is moving, and there is no swimming on this trip.
