Wooden walkway over shallow water at Rach Vem fishing village on Phu Quoc's north coast in morning light

Seven nights, quiet north, then south

Four nights on the north-west coast, where the beaches are emptier and the sun sets over the sea, then three in the south for Sunset Town and an early swim at Bai Sao. Three days have nothing booked.

This plan is for couples who want the first half of their trip to be slow, on a quieter coast, and the second half to have evenings out. The north-west beaches face the sunset just as Long Beach does, but they are further from town and less crowded; a travel guide on the island describes Bai Dai and Ganh Dau as wide, less crowded beaches.

The price of that quiet is distance. Bai Dai is about 30 to 32 km and 40 to 50 minutes by car from the airport, and the drive from Duong Dong to Ganh Dau is about 50 to 70 minutes by bus. You will not pop into town for dinner. That is the point of the first four nights.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive, drive north

Your driver meets you at the airport. The road north takes about 40 to 50 minutes to Bai Dai; Ong Lang and Vung Bau are nearer. We choose the base with you from three stretches of the north-west coast: Ong Lang, with small villa resorts; Vung Bau, a crescent between Ong Lang and Bai Dai; and Bai Dai itself, with over 1.5 km of white sand and larger resorts.

Nothing else is planned. The beach in front of you faces west.

Day 2

Empty day

No plan. One practical note for Ong Lang: some resorts there offer free non-motorised water sports only from November to April and suspend them from May to October, when the sea on this coast is rougher. Ask at your hotel before you plan a kayak at sunset.

Day 3

Rach Vem in the morning, Ganh Dau at sunset

Starfish in the clear shallows at Rach Vem, in the dry months

Leave at about 07:00 for Rach Vem, a fishing village on the north coast near Ganh Dau with wooden walkways over the water. In the early months of the year, red starfish appear on the sand in the shallows; look without lifting them out of the water. Back at the hotel by late morning for the hot hours.

In the late afternoon the driver takes you to Ganh Dau, near the north-western tip, for sunset on a beach with far fewer people than Long Beach. Dinner near the beach or back at the hotel.

Day 4

Empty day

Nothing booked. If you want a short outing, Phu Quoc is known for black pepper and visitors can walk through pepper gardens; the national park, which covers much of the north of the island, has forest trails to streams and viewpoints. We can arrange a car for either, but it is optional and not in the price.

Day 5

Across the island to the south, Kiss Bridge at sunset

The Kiss Bridge at the last light, after four quiet days

A late check-out if the hotel allows it, then the drive south. Duong Dong to An Thoi alone is about 40 to 50 minutes and Bai Dai to the airport 40 to 50, so from the north-west the transfer takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes; we stop for lunch on the way and arrive in time for the hot hours in the new hotel.

At about 16:00, Sunset Town and the Kiss Bridge, with the 17:00 jet-ski and flyboard show in front of the bridge if you want it and the sunset after. Entry between 16:00 and 19:00 is 100,000 VND per person. Dinner at the Vui Phet night market or at a table we book for you.

Day 6

Empty day

No plan. The south has more within reach than the north-west: the cable car to Hon Thom leaves from Sunset Town, and Bai Khem's beach is also in the south. Both are your choice on the day, not part of the plan.

Day 7

Bai Sao at 06:30, sunset boat in the evening

An early start for Bai Sao, the calm white-sand beach on the south-east coast, before it fills. Back at the hotel by 10:00 and nothing until late afternoon.

If you add the sunset boat for two, it collects you about 1 h 45 before sunset and brings you back after dinner on board. If not, the evening is yours; the Duong Dong night market is about 40 to 50 minutes north of An Thoi.

Day 8

About the times

Drive times are published estimates for each road; your day plan confirms them for your hotels. Sunset times are computed for Duong Dong; the north-west coast differs by a minute or two.

Why the north first

Two reasons. The first is rest: after the flight, four nights with very little to do is the simplest way to recover, and the north-west is the coast where that is easiest. The second is the evening: the south has Sunset Town's shows and the Vui Phet market, which are more fun at the end of a trip than at the start.

In May to October we usually reverse the order or move the second base to the south-east coast. The west-facing north is the side that takes the monsoon's waves in those months, and the south-east is the calm side. The quiet-beaches guide explains which beach is calm when.

The rainy-day figures come from the island's climate table. They are monthly averages, not forecasts. Directions are computed from the sun's position: from November to February the sun sets south of west, which suits beaches and viewpoints that look south-west, such as the Kiss Bridge.

Who this itinerary is not for

  • Couples who want to eat in a different restaurant in town every night. The first four nights are far from Duong Dong.
  • Anyone who dislikes a long transfer. Day five is about an hour to an hour and a half across the island.
  • Travellers expecting starfish all year. They are reported in the early months of the year, not every month.
  • Couples who want a two-week stay built around spa days. That is a different kind of trip, and not one we plan.

Making it shorter or longer

Six nights: drop one of the north-west empty days. Eight nights: add a night in the south and keep it empty. Fewer than six, and the five-night honeymoon is the better shape, because two bases on opposite ends of the island need at least three nights at the first to be worth the move.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the north-west too remote for a honeymoon?

It is quieter, not cut off. Resorts there have their own restaurants, and the airport is 40 to 50 minutes by car. What you lose is walking out to a choice of restaurants in town.

When are the starfish at Rach Vem?

A local guide reports them on the sand in the early months of the year. We do not promise them; if they matter to you, travel in the first months of the year.

Can we do the whole week on the north-west coast?

Yes, and we will plan it, but you lose the Kiss Bridge and the south's evening options unless you accept a long return drive for one sunset.

What happens in the rainy season?

We reverse the order or move a base to the south-east coast, which is calm from May to October, and treat west-coast sunsets as decisions made on the day.
