Sunset calendar: where to watch, by month
When the sun sets on Phu Quoc in each month, which way it sets, how many rainy days the month averages, and which coast to be on. One table, then the reasoning behind it.

Sunset and last light (civil dusk, when the sky is still bright enough to see without lights) are computed for Duong Dong on the 15th of each month in 2026. The direction is the compass bearing of the setting sun, computed from the sun's position; 270° is due west. Rainy days and rainfall are monthly averages from the island's climate table, not forecasts.

Three things the table shows
The sunset moves by fifty minutes across the year
The earliest sunset falls around 10 November, at about 17:40. The latest falls around 10 July, at about 18:31. If you book a sunset dinner for 18:30 in November, you will sit down in the dark. Our day plans give the time for your actual date.
The sun swings from south-west to north-west
At this latitude the setting sun moves about 47° along the horizon over the year. In December and January it sets west-south-west, which suits viewpoints that look south-west across the sea, such as the Kiss Bridge; on 1 January its operator says the sun sets precisely in the gap between the bridge's arms. In June and July it sets west-north-west, which favours the north-west beaches and the northern end of Long Beach, where the horizon in that direction is open water.
The rainy months are the high-sunset months
The latest sunsets come in the wettest stretch of the year. From May to October each month averages 19 to 24 rainy days, and August and September each average more than 470 mm. Rain on Phu Quoc in that season usually comes as short, heavy showers rather than all-day rain, so an evening can still clear; but you cannot plan a single sunset and count on it.

West coast or south coast?
Both of the island's sunset areas face the sea to the west. The choice between them is about the evening around the sunset, not the sunset itself.
| Long Beach & Dinh Cau | Sunset Town & Kiss Bridge | North-west (Ong Lang to Ganh Dau) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crowd at sunset | Busy near Duong Dong, quieter south | Busy: price doubles 16:00–19:00 | Less crowded |
| After sunset | Duong Dong night market, 17:00–22:00 | Vui Phet market to midnight, shows | Hotel restaurants |
| Frame | Open sea, shrine on the rocks | The bridge's arms; the 1 January alignment | Rocks, forest, open sea |
| Suits | First trip, short stay | Couples who want an evening out | Couples who want quiet |
The south-east coast around Bai Sao is the one to avoid for sunsets: it faces east. It is the place for sunrise, which on the 15th of each month ranges from about 05:42 in May and June to about 06:25 in January.

The seasons in one chart
3 = usually clear and calm, 2 = good with some rain, 1 = frequent rain or rough sea on that coast. Built from the dry/wet seasons and monthly rainy days.
The dry season runs from November to April by the national tourism guide's definition, with calm seas and clear skies; other sources narrow it to December to March. In the dry season the north-east monsoon keeps the west coast calm and clear. In the wet season the south-west monsoon sends bigger waves and murkier water onto the west coast, while the east-coast beaches become calm. July to September can bring storms with heavy rain and fairly strong wind, though Phu Quoc is among the places in Vietnam least often hit directly by major storms.

How we use this when we plan
- Dinner bookings start about thirty minutes before the computed sunset for your date if the table faces west, or after last light if it does not.
- The sunset boat leaves the hotel about 1 h 45 before sunset and is never put on your last evening, so a cancelled night can move.
- The photo session starts about two hours before sunset on the west coast, or about 45 minutes before sunrise on the east.
- Every planned sunset has a written fallback: a covered spot facing the same way, or the next evening.
See how this works in practice in the five-night honeymoon and the seven-night itinerary, or compare the coasts on the areas page.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
What time is sunset on Phu Quoc?
Between about 17:40 (around 10 November) and 18:31 (around 10 July), computed for Duong Dong. Mid-January is about 18:02, mid-March about 18:16 and mid-September about 18:06.
Which month has the most reliable sunsets?
February has the fewest rainy days in the climate table, 3.7 on average, followed by January and December. March is close behind.
Can you see the sunset over the sea from Bai Sao?
No. Bai Sao is on the south-east coast and faces the sunrise. For sunset, go to the west or south-west coast.
Is it worth coming in the rainy season for sunsets?
Only if you are flexible. Showers are often short and evenings can clear, but each month from May to October averages 19 to 24 rainy days. Plan several possible evenings rather than one.
